1. Compare the car insurance costs of different car models

Before you buy a new car, find out what the insurance costs will be. Car insurance premiums are based in part on the car's sticker price, the cost to repair it, its overall safety record, and the likelihood of theft.

2. Get quotes from several car insurance companies

Prices vary from company to company, so it pays to shop around. Get at least three or price quotes from different insurance companies. You may also be able to get a comparison of car insurance prices from your state insurance department.

3. Buy your car insurance from the same insurance company that provides your homeowners insurance

Many insurance companies will give you a price break if you buy more than one type of insurance from them. You may also get a reduction in your premium rate if you have more than one vehicle insured with the same company.

4. Request higher deductibles

If you arrange for higher deductibles with your car insurance company, you can lower your costs substantially. In many cases, switching to a $1,000 deductible can save you 40 percent or more. Important: before choosing a higher deductible, make sure that you have enough money set aside to pay it if you have a claim.

5. Check into of low mileage discounts

Some car insurance companies offer discounts to motorists who drive a lower than average number of miles each year. If you car pool to work, then this might apply to you.
